I was the first of the Berkeley classicists who were lucky enough to work on Greek with Mary. I say 'work with' because, as James has already said, she really did not need much more than the occasional correction or suggestion. Indeed, coaching someone with as incisive and disciplined a mind as Mary's was a great way to reveal one's own assumptions and blind spots, and I am sure all of her teachers learned much from her about their own subject (I sure did). The greatest inspiration Mary gave me, however, was the example she set in life-long learning as a way of life. We are all aware, I think, of her accomplishments in multiple fields, above all that of her PhD (those are not easy to come by); but she knew there was always more to learn, more joy to be had from the process, and that one is not defined by any particular specialty. And so I follow the example, a scholar of Latin and Greek who is just about OK at programming and ever threatening to finally conquer the Calculus. Thank you so much for that Mary!
